You can also create your own sets of cards text, images and audio and share sets with friends or upload them to Quizlet.com. You can draw your own images with in-app drawing tool, import images from websites or photo library and record your own audio with the in-app recorder. Good built in features include the ability to set cards to one side for later revision, without having to revise the entire stack and the ability to track progress.

Use Flashcardlet to create your own decks of flashcards and to access the Quizlet library from within the app. You can share your flashcard decks with Dropbox. Decks can be stored your iOS device, so you can study while on the go without a 3G or wi-fi connection.
Note: only decks downloaded from Quizlet can have images.

I Know - Quiz Creation is an app for creating and playing vocab quizzes. It is targeted at families with children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), however it is useful for languages classrooms as it provides an easy means of creating quizzes in which you match images to text and voice. You can edit the existing quizzes by changing the text and recording your own voice. You can also make your own quizzes (6 items per quiz) using your own photos.

Bitsboard is a free iPad app that provides word games, memory games, spelling games, and lots of other activities. When you first open Bitsboard you have access to six topics. Opening any of them takes you to a choice of eight practice activities including flashcards, true or false quizzes, word building practice, reading practice, and matching activities. You can delete topics that are not relevant for languages teaching and modify the rest by changing the image labels to the target language and re-recording the sounds. You can add additional items to each topic using your own photos (taken with the iSight camera or from the Camera Roll). You can import new topic sets within the app or create your own topics.

Futaba (Japanese for 'seedling') is a 4 player word recognition game. The game begins as images zoom into the playing area. The first player to match the word to the image scores a point. Win 3 rounds and players are awarded a seedling. It’s this element of competition that makes the game so popular. Only the full (paid) version is relevant to languages teaching as the free version does not allow teachers to create their own content. New games can be created by using either the built in camera, the camera roll or by copying images to iTunes or Dropbox. Future support is planned for iCloud.
$2.99. The free version is not useful for teaching languages as it can only be played using the inbuilt English content & is limited to 2 players.

The Futaba Classroom Games operates in the same way as the standard Futaba app. Where it differs is that it contains a lot of content organised by learning area, year level etc. If you are sharing iPads with a classroom teacher, this is the version I would recommend you purchase. You can organise your own sets of content so that students in your lesson only have access to these games. The app is supported with a book that you can download from the iTunes store (available in app). Check out this promotional video to give you a general idea of how the game works.

Move and Match is an easy to use app for practising vocabulary. It has lots of applications in the languages classroom:
  • Matching words and images / memory card activities
  • Taking photos and labelling them for vocabulary practice or creating a photo dictionary with example sentences
  • Gap fill activities for vocabulary or comprehension
  • Moving single or multiple words to create sentences
  • Moving full sentences to create paragraphs
  • Reordering paragraphs to complete a story

SpellBoard lets users create custom lists of vocabulary, record audio, enter a phrase for the word, an image, antonyms and/or synonyms and notes. 
The custom spelling lists can be used in a range of word games: Word Search, Word Scramble, Alphabetization, Word/Sentence Matching as well as Missing Letter puzzles. Users can share their quizzes with other SpellBoard users (via email, iCloud, Dropbox, AirDrop, Bluetooth or iTunes File Sharing) which means that only one student needs to enter the week’s spelling words and then share the list with other classmates. Additionally, SpellBoard allows for multiple student profiles so teachers can track the performance of any student across any number of quizzes.

To play Ultimate Hangman, click on options initially to select one of the four different themes (doodle Hangman, classic Hangman, Christmas Snowman and Flower Power), and to switch the music and sounds on or off. Once you are ready, click on play to start. There are inbuilt vocabulary sets for Dutch, German, French, 
Portuguese and Spanish. If you want to practice different vocabulary or a different language entirely, click on custom words to add your own set of vocabulary. Give the set a name. You must input a minimum of two words and each word can’t be more than 14 characters long. When players have finished, their scores are tallied which brings an element of competition into the game.

Memoria is a pair matching game. The vocabulary is pre-recorded in English, using a wide range of pre-installed cards. You can switch the language settings of the game to Spanish, French, Russian and Ukrainian. If you teach a different language and/or want to practise alternative sets of vocabulary of you can make your own cards from images in your iPad’s photo library. You can then label them in the target language and add a 5 second recording to each one.

VocabVideo has been developed in collaboration with Independent Schools of Victoria. The user interface is presented in Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese. Vocab Videos provides a framework where the student can document words from the target language along with the English translation, groupings such as noun, verb, etc and the lesson the word was from. . Students can enter data using the the iPad International keyboard to type target language characters. They can then link that word to a video of themselves gesturing the word, to provide a more complete educational experience.

Memrise is a series of flashcard courses designed by the Memrise community to help users learn a language. It uses "mems" to help users form vivid sensory memories. These mems could be mnemonics, photos, sample sentences etc. What makes Memrise different is that it also offers audio pronunciations of the words and in many cases videos that feature people using the words or acting them out. Registered users of Memrise can download courses in a range of languages for offline access.
